Classic Singles #24: The Shady Daze – Love Is a Beautiful Thing / I’ll Make You Pay (1967)

Shady Daze_labelAnother one on Chicago’s USA Records for you today. The Shady Daze were from the Windy City and this was their debut single. The band were regulars at The Blue Village in Westmont, Illinois, so much so that the club advertised itself as “the home of The Shady Daze”. They played on the same bill as Buffalo Springfield and The Doors and were friends with other Chicago groups including The Cryan’ Shames and The Shadows of Knight.

The a-side is a cover of The Young Rascal’s ‘Love Is a Beautiful Thing’. This is a great pop song in its own right and you can’t really go wrong with it, and indeed the single was a local hit.

But it is on the flip side that we truly find gold. ‘I’ll Make You Pay’ is an up-tempo fuzz monster that radiates an effortless cool.

The a-side of their second single ‘Dennis Dupree From Danville’ was written by fellow Chicago band Saturday’s Children, and the flip is a cover of a Sam and Dave number.

Reissues: ‘I’ll Make You Pay’ is on Sundazed’s 2131 Michigan Avenue; the same label has also issued a vinyl EP compiling all four sides of their two singles.

Discography:
  • Love Is a Beautiful Thing / I’ll Make You Pay (USA, 1967)
  • Dennis Dupree From Danville / You Don’t Know (It’s a Gass, 1968)
